This Privacy Policy explains what information is collected through christophergorges.com (the "Site"), how it is used, who it is shared with, and the choices and rights you have. The Site is operated by Chris Gorges and Johnni Gorges ("we," "us," or "our"). It includes our monthly newsletter, the Fox Family Adventures pages and shop, free downloads, our beta reader program, and our ASL practice sessions.

Information We Collect

Information you give us

  • Newsletter and free resources. Your first name and email address when you subscribe to our newsletter or request a free guide or download, such as the Fox Family Adventures activity packet.

  • Orders. Your name, email address, shipping and billing addresses, phone number (if provided), and order details when you buy from our shop. Payment card details are handled directly by our payment processors and are never stored by us.

  • ASL community practice. Your first name and email address when you sign up to get the Zoom link for our weekly ASL practice sessions.

  • Beta reader accounts. Your name, email address, and account login details when you create a free reader account on the Site.

  • Beta reader feedback. Your answers to our private feedback questionnaires, plus anything else you choose to tell us about a book.

  • Messages. Anything you send us by email.

Information collected automatically

  • Usage and device information. Your IP address, browser type, device type, referring page, pages visited, and similar information, collected through Squarespace's built-in analytics.

  • Cookies and similar technologies. See our Cookie Policy.

ASL practice sessions on Zoom

We do not record our ASL practice sessions. We do use Zoom's meeting summary feature, which processes spoken audio during a session to generate a written summary for us. Signed conversation is not captured by this feature, but anything said aloud may be included in the summary. We use these summaries only to plan and improve future sessions, and we do not publish or share them. Your use of Zoom is also subject to Zoom's Privacy Statement.

How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • Send you the newsletter, free resources, and updates you asked for.

  • Process, fulfill, and ship your orders, and contact you about them.

  • Send you the Zoom link and reminders for ASL practice sessions.

  • Create and manage your beta reader account and give you access to reading copies.

  • Read and use your feedback to revise our books. Beta reader feedback is used for revisions only. We do not quote it publicly or use it in marketing.

  • Reply to your messages.

  • Understand how the Site is used so we can improve it.

  • Prevent fraud, meet legal, tax, and accounting obligations, and enforce our Terms of Service.

Email lists

  • When you request a free guide or sign up for ASL practice, you are also subscribed to our monthly newsletter. We say so on each signup form.

  • When you request Fox Family Adventures materials, you will receive occasional Fox Family Adventures emails. These are separate from our monthly newsletter.

  • When you place an order, we send emails about that order. We do not add you to a marketing list just because you bought something.

  • Creating a beta reader account does not subscribe you to marketing emails. Marketing subscriptions are separate and optional.

You can unsubscribe from any list at any time using the link at the bottom of every email.

How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

We share information only with the service providers that help us run the Site, and only for that purpose:

  • Squarespace hosts the Site, runs our shop and checkout, manages beta reader accounts, and provides site analytics.

  • Payment processors, including Afterpay if you choose it at checkout, process your payment.

  • Order fulfillment and shipping providers print, pack, and deliver your order.

  • Kit (formerly ConvertKit) runs our email lists, signup forms, and newsletter delivery.

  • Zoom hosts our ASL practice sessions and generates meeting summaries.

  • Spotify shows embedded music players on our Music page.

These providers handle your information under their own privacy policies. We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect our rights or the safety of others.

Links to other sites

The Site links to other websites, including Amazon and YouTube. Some of our Amazon links are affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. When you follow a link to Amazon, Amazon may collect information under its own privacy policy. On any other site, that site's privacy practices apply, not ours.

How Long We Keep Information

  • Newsletter and ASL signups: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete your information.

  • Order records: as long as needed to fulfill your order, handle returns, and meet tax and accounting requirements.

  • Beta reader accounts: until you close your account or ask us to delete it.

  • Beta reader feedback: as long as it is useful for revising the book it relates to. You can ask us to delete it at any time.

  • Zoom meeting summaries: no longer than 12 months.

  • Analytics data: as set by Squarespace's standard retention.

Your Choices and Rights

Everyone can:

  • Unsubscribe from emails using the link in any email.

  • Ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you.

  • Ask us to correct or delete your personal information.

  • Close your beta reader account.

  • Control cookies through our cookie banner and your browser settings.

California residents

Under the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CCPA/CPRA), you have the right to:

  • Know what personal information we collect, use, and disclose.

  • Access the personal information we hold about you.

  • Correct inaccurate personal information.

  • Delete your personal information, subject to certain legal exceptions.

  • Opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information. We do not sell or share personal information.

  • Not be discriminated against for exercising any of these rights.

Visitors in the EU, EEA, and UK

We rely on your consent for newsletter emails and non-essential cookies. We rely on performance of a contract to process your orders and run your beta reader account. We rely on legal obligation to keep tax and accounting records. We rely on our legitimate interests for basic site security and for replying to your messages. You also have the right to restrict or object to how we process your information, to receive your information in a portable format, to withdraw your consent at any time, and to complain to your local data protection authority.

How to make a request

Email chris@christophergorges.com with the subject line "Privacy Request." We may need to confirm your identity before we act on the request. We will respond within the time the law requires.

Children's Privacy

The Site, including our children's book pages, shop, and activity materials, is meant for adults: parents, guardians, teachers, and other adult readers. Fox Family Adventures downloads should be requested by a parent, guardian, or educator. Beta reader accounts and ASL practice signups are for adults 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Security

We rely on our service providers' security measures to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post changes here and update the "Last Updated" date. If a change is significant, we may also notify subscribers by email.
